There are several reasons that New Year Resolutions become an exercise in futility for most. It is important to watch out for the pitfalls if you are to stick to your own and make something of them.
First, we can acknowledge that generic goals like “lose body fat” or “train harder” are too loose. When you have no easy tell on whether you are succeeding or failing, the goal tends to fall to the wayside altogether. Make sure that you get specific about exactly what the outcome looks like, as well as the process to get there.
Another issue is being unrealistic with goals. While it is important to strive for something difficult to achieve, if you have zero self-belief that you can reach it, there is little to be gained. Adjust your expectations to have goals that you will be motivated to go after every day.
Lack of resilience is a big defeater for any new goal. In fact, the majority of people really ought to start with a goal of developing their resilience. When this is in abundance, the ability to take on greater and greater challenges comes with it. Perhaps goals are unrealistic because you have yet to develop the necessary resilience to go through with your plans. If so, make this a primary focus.
Elsewhere, we can say that a lack of external support can be a determining factor in failing to achieve goals. With this in mind, bring others on board with your vision. Tell them what you are seeking and encourage them to support you in the necessary ways to ensure you stay resilient in the more uncomfortable moments.
Lastly, so many players attempt to make wild leaps with their New Year’s Resolution. While it is possible to chase after the large and seemingly difficult, this can only be done if clear and easy, smaller steps are in place to chase along the way. Simplify the big goal into smaller ones which are easier to focus on and achieve.
