A year ago today, Benzema was not a main mention for the Ballon d’Or. In the same period, there were dozens of break out stars, as well as those players who regressed and failed to live up to expectation. The turn of a new year may be artificial, after all, it is just another day. Yet, it is undeniable that the idea of a fresh start, or new motivations to push on and have a real go at something, do lead to performance enhancement for those willing to invite them.
If everything you could possibly expect from the next 12 months came true, where would you be? What would it look like? Who would be there beside you? Make as vivid a picture of what success looks like as possible. What will it take to get there? How will you need to train, recover, eat, sleep? Be clear about what intent to achieve these looks like. Also picture what failure would be. What if you fail to make a change? If you stagnate and fall further back on these goals? Keep these images in contrast each time that you begin to falter or misstep from what you know you need to do. Progress takes time and effort and is in no way linear direct to your goals. Remain prepared for setbacks, mistakes and general discomfort. Success or failure, if you commit to these, the other side of 2023, you can finish a much stronger player and individual than when you started it.
