Fatigue decreases performance, increases injury risk and can have both physical and psychological consequences that can extend beyond the short-term. Yet, it is entirely possible to manage fatigue within busy periods of the season to continue performing optimally.
⠀
One of the key combat strategies is managing workload and monitoring levels of fatigue to ensure that there are measures put in place to prevent fatigue instead of constantly trying to react to it.⠀
⠀
This can be done using both objective measurements and subjective information. Being honest when you may feel physically, emotionally or mentally tired is integral to this approach. Being open allows performance, medical and scientific teams to devise individualised strategies. Examples of these are: taking a few days off from training, adjusting individual load during training - particularly individual training, and using specific recovery therapies. Focus also goes towards rest, sleep, nutrition and hydration as vital components to any good strategy,
⠀
Every player has a different adaptation to training loads and therefore resulting strategies. Part of our job working with the elite is continually testing and understanding our players to maintain optimal performance, development, recovery and routine.
