SYSTEMATIC DESENSITISATION

Systematic desensitisation is a technique that aims to reduce a player’s anxiety or fear response to a specific stimulus. This is achieved through a gradual exposure to the feared stimulus while maintaining a relaxed state.

First, footballers need to identify triggers that lead to anxiety or stress. These triggers could include anything from playing in front of a large crowd to facing tough opposition. Identifying these triggers is the first step towards applying systematic desensitisation effectively.

Once triggers are identified, they can be ranked in order of their anxiety-inducing potential. For example, facing a penalty in a high-stakes match might be more anxiety-provoking than playing in a crowded stadium during a regular game.

To prepare, it can help to learn or already know relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and visualisation. These techniques help them maintain a calm and composed state while confronting the triggers.

The actual process of systematic desensitisation involves gradual exposure. The player starts with the least anxiety-inducing trigger from the hierarchy and practices relaxation techniques while visualising themselves successfully managing the situation without succumbing to anxiety. As they then become more comfortable with each level of exposure, they can gradually move up the hierarchy, facing more challenging triggers. The goal is to replace the anxiety response with a sense of control and calmness.
